Roof cleaning in Hemsby, Winterton and Martham

The coast road north of Great Yarmouth, where the weather comes straight off the sea and over the dunes.

Driveway, gutter and roof cleaning in Hemsby

Hemsby and Winterton sit right behind the dunes, so homes here get the full force of the weather. The wind carries sand and salt inland, roofs stay damp, and moss and lichen grow quickly on the slopes that face away from the sun. A few miles inland, Martham is more sheltered, with its village green, older cottages and newer estates, and there the problem is shade and damp rather than wind.

A lot of homes along this stretch are bungalows, chalets and cottages, with low roofs and short gutters that fill quickly. Some are holiday lets or second homes, which means nobody is around to notice a blocked downpipe until it overflows. You do not need to be there while we work, as long as we can get to the area we are cleaning.

Whatever the property, we use the method that suits the surface: a soft wash for roofs, a rotary cleaner for paving, and a vacuum pole and camera for gutters, all priced before we start.

Why things go green on the coast road

Two kinds of trouble on one stretch of coast: wind and salt by the sea, shade and damp a few miles inland.

Wind over the dunes

Onshore wind drives salt and sand into every gap: paving joints, gutter outlets and the laps of roof tiles. Surfaces stay damp, and damp is what moss and algae need.

Low roofs, quick gutters

Bungalow and chalet roofs shed moss straight into short gutters. One downpipe blocked with moss can send water down a wall within a winter.

Sheltered Martham

The trees and hedges that shelter Martham also shade it. Shaded patios and north-facing roofs grow algae all year round.

Hemsby, Winterton and Martham questions

Do you cover Winterton-on-Sea and Martham?

Yes. Hemsby, Winterton-on-Sea and Martham are all covered, along with Scratby, Ormesby St Margaret and the villages towards Potter Heigham.

My property is a holiday let. Do I need to be there?

No, as long as we can get to the area we are cleaning. We agree the job and the price with you first, then let you know when it is done.

Can you clean a chalet or bungalow roof?

Yes. Low roofs are scraped by hand and soft washed at low pressure with a biocide. We never pressure wash roofs, because it strips the surface off the tiles and forces water underneath. Roofs are quoted after a look at the property.

Will a soft wash stop the moss coming back?

It slows it right down. The treatment kills what is left after the moss is scraped off, and the staining fades over the following months. On an exposed coastal roof, most people have it treated again every few years.

How often should gutters be cleared near the sea?

Twice a year is sensible on the coast: once in autumn after the leaves have come down, and again in spring after the winter storms.
